Happy New Year?

So…it’s been a while. To start the New Year right, I decided to write a quick “Holiday Letter” type of post to catch you up on what happened last year. So I logged into my site (it took a minute to remember how!) and I confidently clicked “Add New” under the Posts category.  And then I ran into Blocks. WTF are blocks Wordpress?

What was formerly the Gutenberg plugin is now the standard WordPress editor. Apparently, the point was to create self-contained pieces of content that would / could be moved around a page without hosing the formatting of the rest of the content. Ok, I get it, the WordPress editor can be tricky. I’m constantly switching between the visual and the text editor because sometimes the formatting options available in the visual editor are limited. Or plain don’t work. When that happens, I dive into the HTML on the backend and fix my content. Yes, it was a little tricky to learn at first, but I had fun learning how to manipulate HTML.

So, something new. Not always a bad thing, right? Ok WordPress, let’s see what these blocks can do. I tried. I did. I tried writing in one block, separating them into several blocks, trying a different block style.  My hyperlinks wouldn’t stay put. There were different spacings between the different blocks. The formatting was all over the place; font styles and sizes changing from block to block.

Enter my friend Google who let me know, via this article, that I can still use the classic editor via installing a plugin. Phew. And now we’re back to our regularly scheduled irregular posting. I’ll take the time to learn blocks and I’m sure they’ll be quite lovely. But for now, this gal is mighty relieved to use the tried and not trusty visual + HTML + quirks + head-scratching “Wait, whaaa??” classic editor.  Happy 2019 Y’all.

Who here likes blocks?? Are you all merrily whizzing away with the Gutenberg editor?
