Revive Your Flagging NaNo Project

NaNo writers, this is your mid-month wellness check. How are your projects going?

If you’re rocking NaNo 2022, keep typing! You probably won’t see this article until December, anyway.

But if your schedule has slipped and your word-count graph is shallowing, or has flat-lined, read on.

NaNo Expectations

If you look at the math, to complete 50,000 words in 30 days means writing an average of 1,667 words per day. Since today is the 18th, that means your NaNo project should be at or above 30,000 words.

But what if it’s not?

If you started strong but stalled out or got stuck near the middle of your project, check your structure. If you’ve gotten stuck in your story, see if there’s something you can tweak with your character, their goals and motivations, or even your world.

And if you’re lacking motivation, it’s time to remind yourself why you started! Here are ten tips to help you finish your project and ten reasons you should finish your book.

Fun fact: even if you start today with zero words, it’s still possible to win NaNoWriMo in 2022. Yes, you’ll be writing an average of 4,167 words per day, but it’s possible.

Reality Check

Writing a first draft is hard. Not everyone will finish their NaNo project.

But if your project isn’t going well, don’t despair. The struggle is normal.

Your story idea was exciting enough to get you started, but now you need to lean on your grit and determination.

You can write your novel.

Boom.

Even if you only get to a quarter of your goal, that’s still a quarter of your book done! So give yourself grace for whatever has been holding you back, visualize the weight and feel of your book in your hand, and get typing.
