Writing Magic at the Rainforest Writers Retreat 2025

I just wrapped up my fifth Rainforest Writers Retreat in Quinault, Washington. It was exactly the creative reset I needed. There’s something about the quiet hush of the rainforest—the steady patter of rain, the mossy stillness of the trees—that clears mental clutter and makes room for words.

During this year’s retreat, I brought a brand new project.

I also brought an outline and enthusiasm.

It worked; I drafted more than 30,000 words. My momentum built with each writing session, leaving me eager to continue the work. After living in Matthew Sugiyama’s world for over seven years, it was exhilarating to dive into something fresh.

The craft talks were another highlight—daily sessions packed with insight and encouragement from fellow speculative fiction writers who understand the ups and downs of the creative process.

The retreat’s rhythm really works for me. From the early morning writing sessions while watching the sun rise over Lake Quinault, to conversing with talented speculative fiction writers from all over North America. This year, the weather cooperated long enough for me to stretch my legs and hike in the Olympic National Park.

We filled our evenings with good company and great food. (Seriously, the salmon alone was worth the trip.)

Writing retreats are a gift, but what makes Rainforest special is the community. The encouragement and creative energy of so many writers in one space are contagious.

I left creatively recharged and thrilled with my new project. Rainforest magic is real—and I can’t wait to return next year.
