Book Description

Estranged from his family, writer Merritt Fernsby is surprised when he inherits a remote estate in the Narragansett Bay, a house of haunted history and ill temper. Hulda Larkin of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms has been trained in taming such structures in order to preserve their historical and magical significance. She and Merritt investigate, but the house’s secrets run deeper than anticipated. And the sentient walls aren’t their only concern ― something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within.

Review

I first came across fiction by Charlie N. Holmberg when I was exploring stories that emphasized art-based magic. Her debut novel, The Paper Magician, featured a heroine who could animate paper creatures. The story was entertaining… but thin.

And no, that’s not a paper joke.

Holmberg’s gaslamp fantasy world held promise, but the story didn’t grab me enough to make me want to read the other three books in the series.

When I saw Holmberg’s Keeper of Enchanted Rooms pop up, I hesitated. But the whimsical cover, along with the idea of an ill-tempered haunted house, intrigued me, so I gave it a shot.

I’m glad I did!

The story was a delightful, fast read that made me think about how we can turn well-worn fantasy tropes on their heads. I enjoyed her whimsical take on tropes like a haunted house, found family, and opposites attract.

Keeper of Enchanted Rooms has a little something for everyone who loves the cozy side of fantasy. It offers mystery, a sweet romance, intrigue, twists, and just enough danger to keep you flipping pages. I enjoyed the alternative history setting, and imagining what New England in the 1800s would have been like with a *little* bit of magic.

Holmberg’s spin on magical abilities was fun and unique; they made me want to further explore this world! She has already published the second novel in the series, and the third book will publish this year (2024), so if you enjoy her setting, there is more to explore. If you’re looking for a fun alternative history fantasy with cozy vibes, give Keeper of Enchanted Rooms a try.
